Be on Call for the Movement!
The “On Call for the Movement” virtual mass meetings are spaces for deepening of political analysis and collective development of the moral imagination and moral imperative needed to build and sustain a moral revolution.
Following yet additional killings – this time killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge and Philando Castile in Minneapolis – faith leaders and community organizers from around the country began to gather on calls to lament and organize. Emerging from these calls it became clear that rage and despair are propelling people to act.
It also became clear that although folks are showing up in streets across the country and demanding change, these demands have often been for behavioral rather than structural change. Increasingly we are seeing calls for greater police accountability, training on implicit bias, and a resurgence of the concept of community policing.
While all of these are good, we need more. The energy in this moment presents us with an opportunity to significantly move the dial on the structural changes needed to move us from a place where poor communities are over-policed, underemployed and underserved to one where every community has the social investments in people and infrastructures they require to grow and thrive. To enable the development of this directional focus we need a space for deepening of political analysis, as well as the development of the moral imagination and moral imperative to make such a demand for this shift possible.
In determining how such a space could be created we harkened back to the strategies of the Civil Rights Movement – more specifically the use of the mass meeting. During the Civil Rights Movement the mass meeting was used as a space for the community to lament, nurture moral imagination and radical visioning, strengthen political resolve and call all into action. We believe that the power of modern day technology can enable us to bring faith and community leaders from around the country into a virtual mass meeting space and we are asking all to be ON CALL FOR THE MOVEMENT!
