6,251. That is the number
of soldiers we have lost at war since the start of 2001 following the 9/11
attacks on the World Trade Center. We as a country have lost over 6,000
soldiers overseas due to various wars, wars we are considered to have won. Even
after winning these wars overseas and coming back with over 6,000 fewer
Americans we are still losing one particular war. This war we are losing is
right in our backyard to our own people, this war is abortion. To put into
context just how many lives have been taken by abortion I researched the number
of abortions each year since 1973 and it was an astonishing amount, 59,115,995.
However, in order to compare the lives lost in war since 2001 and the number of
unborn babies abandoned I added the yearly totals from 2001 to the present and
it came to 18,178332. That makes 6,000 lives lost in war look like nearly nothing,
yet these millions and millions of lives are being taken by the hands of our
own people and own country every day.

Abortion is a widely
spreading controversy and is becoming the topic of some heated debates around
the country and world. Some argue that the case of killing innocent babies is a
right of the mother carrying. This perspective is called the “Pro-Choice” side.
However, many argue that abortion is in fact killing an innocent baby, a human
life. This side of the argument goes by the title of “Pro-Life” and it is the
stance I choose to take. Abortion is a brutal and shameful thing to do to an
unborn child, as it can cause short-term and long-term effects to the mother
abandoning this unborn child, it completely goes against God’s Word, and it is
absolute murder of human life.

In order to understand
either side of the argument, you need to first understand the definition of
abortion and the history behind it. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a
human pregnancy. This most commonly occurs in the first 28 weeks of the
females’ pregnancy. However, an abortion can be done at any time and any moment
during the pregnancy. Many centuries ago and throughout various cultures women
have always helped each other abort their babies. These acts by these women
went on for a few centuries until the start of the 19th century. It
wasn’t until 1803 when Britain started to make progress into making
antiabortion laws. These laws started out as minor fines and more of a slap on
the wrist than anything. However, as the 19th century went along
these penalties became more strict and serious resulting in hefty fines and
even jail time. Later on, into the century these laws began to be enforced so
heavily, this is when the U.S. started to catch wind of this shameful act as
individual states started following in Britain’s footsteps. Some exceptions
were made however, the biggest exception for abortion was the fact that if
actually delivering the baby could potentially cause harm or death to the
mother than it would be allowed to go through with the abortion process. Even
though many individual states in the U.S. have prohibited abortion, women still
continued to join together and carry on with the abortion process. Although
they were legally in the wrong with their respective state, they managed to
slip through without conviction of a crime. Thus being because of the
conflicted beliefs between the jurors resulting in them refusing to convict
these women.

Throughout the mid 1800’s the number of white
newborns declined immensely, this causing the government to stress to white,
native-born females to start to reproduce in order to stop the declining of the
white race. Of course, without the legalization of abortion in certain states,
women couldn’t help but to carry on with pregnancies.

Planned Parenthood is a
nonprofit organization that does research into and gives advice on
contraception, family planning, and reproductive problems. In other words,
planned parenthood is an abortion clinic that provides the knowledge and aid to
kill unborn babies. The Planned Parenthood organization was started up shortly
after World War II in hopes to promote abortion to young women who did not want
to carry on with their baby. This organization was under the wings of an
extreme liberal and feminist, Margaret Sanger. It started with the concept of
being selfish. One of the intentions behind this movement was that parents had
the fear of having kids, this would cause them to have less money and time for
themselves so they wanted to abort unplanned babies. The other intention was to
stop the reproduction of poor people. Poor people were looked at as a dangerous
threat to our country and society as a whole. If poor people couldn’t even
support themselves then they most definitely wouldn’t be able to support a
baby. Margaret Sanger in her book describes poor people as the unfit and goes
on to say, “we sought out to stop the multiplication of the unfit”.

The most blatant and shameful
part of the abortion process is that it is absolute murder of an unborn yet
living human being. Murder is the unlawful premeditated killing of one human
being by another and this applies to any human regardless of its state of life.
With this being said, the fetus develops a heartbeat three to four weeks and
once this happens then the fetus is now considered human life. After this point
in the pregnancy is when the abortion is considered to be taking away a human
life known as murder. The other side of the argument would most commonly point
out that if they were to abort before the first three weeks that it wouldn’t be
taking a life. This point is true.  However,
unfortunately majority of the time people do not realize they have been pregnant
until four to five weeks after conception which is after the fetus develops a
heartbeat becoming a human. The bible shows many examples of how God is against
the murder of other human beings. In the Exodus 20:13 it states, “you shall not
murder”, in Matthew 5:21-26 it states, “You have heard that it was said to
those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and murderers will be liable to judgment.’
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to
judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever
says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So, if you are offering
your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something
against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled
to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with
your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you
over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison.” In Exodus
21:12-14 it states the difference of the accidental taking of life and the
deliberate taking of life known as murder when it says, Exodus 21:12-14 “Anyone
who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death. However, if he
does not do it intentionally, but God lets it happen, he is to flee to a place
I will designate. But if a man schemes and kills another man deliberately, take
him away from my altar and put him to death”. In order to proceed with the
abortion process, it requires a conscious effort and decision to go through
with it and at this point the choice has been made to intentionally take the
life of an unborn child making it the act of murder.

In the side of protecting
the mother it is best to stay away from aborting a child because it can have
many different short-term and long-term effects on a could have been mother. Effects
may take place in the form of emotional, physical, and psychological states. Abortion
can emotionally effect each woman in different ways. The emotional result of
aborting a child can include the mother regretting her decision, being angry
for doing so, feeling the quilt of taking a life, and living with the shame constantly
being on their minds.  Not all women
experience the same types of emotional problems after abortion. However, for
many, personal grief after abortion often times become a real emotional scar on
the mother who aborted. This is referred to as Post Abortion Syndrome or Post
Abortion Stress Syndrome, which refers to a type of Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder.

Physical effects of
abortion tend to be more common among the short-term effects than the long-term
because the female body is capable of returning to its normal state as it was before
the pregnancy. Nationwide polls show that when completing an abortion that 18% of
these women who choose to proceed start to suffer from complications instantly,
out of these 18% of women one-fourth or 25% were said to be major complications.
Over two hundred potential complications have been linked to prompted abortion.
The less severe complications normally but are not limited to random hemorrhaging,
temperatures, severe pain in the stomach area, intestinal malfunctions, sickness,
and loss of red blood cells throughout the body. The severe complications that
show up the most with abortions are infection, extreme and random bleeding, embolism,
seizures, hemorrhage, cervical injury, and can even result in your body going
into distress. Although these immediate complications of abortion are more
often treatable than not treatable, these complications often times lead to
long-term reproductive damage of much and much more health issues. One of the
more serious complications is that nearly 20% of mothers who have aborted end
up being permanently sterile after these abortion procedures. In addition to
this the mothers who abort are 25% more likely to die during their next
pregnancy than those who don’t abort at all. Countries who have legalized
abortion have seen the death tolls due to pregnancy complications sky rocket
over the last few decades. These different complications due to abortion show
the great risk of physical damage to the mother after their abortion.

Aside from the physical
and emotion effects of abortion the psychological effects can be much bigger of
a problem for mothers who go through abortion because these psychological
effects never go away. There is only one positive post-abortion feeling that
moms get prior to the procedure. This feeling is relief. This is a good feeling
because it takes the pressure off of the moms’ mind and comes to realization
that it is over with. Or so they think. The negative psychological effects
start to pile up after the sense of relief starts to diminish. Aborting women
start to go into a phase of emotional numbness and often struggle heavily to
express their emotions to other people. This also causes them to lose the capability
to even understand their own emotions. Researchers have shown that prior to the
first three to four weeks after the abortion takes place that women experience unhealthy
reactions which were shown in just about 55% of women. Ten weeks after the
abortion women have shown that majority of them feel a heavy weight hanging
over them in guilt, just under half become very shaky and unable to think
straight, and many were unable to get a healthy amount of sleep each night
after the abortion. Psychological effects are the most devastating to the
mother because the scars never truly go away. Mothers who have aborted often
times have psychological effects reoccur around what would have been bench mark
years of the child’s life. This means that mothers slip back into depression,
guilt, and any other effects they had around times like birthdays, holidays,
and what would have been graduations.

As Christians, we base
our life and our faith on God’s Word. There are two examples in Scripture that
give us God’s view of abortion.  God says
that all of life is sacred and human life is the most valuable and precious
commodity in the world. From God’s perspective, each one of us is more valuable
than all other things in the world. God says that each person has infinite
value and worth because He made us. He made us in His image with the ability to
create, think, respond and have a relationship with Him. And because we are so
valuable, Jesus gave His own life to pay for our sins in order to allow for us
to have a relationship with Him. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 6:20 that “You
were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body”. Jesus also says,
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give
his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45) We matter so much to God that He
sent His only Son, Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. Scripture imputes
the same value of the pre-born child on all of human life. “For you created my
inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I
am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full
well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth”. (Psalm 139:13-16). In
the piece of scripture, we can see God saying, “I’ve been creating and
designing not just full-fledged human beings, but human beings even before
their conception.” That means long before our we were actually formed or even
before we could move around in the womb, God was creating us. He had our lives
already planned and knew us before we were even born. God put us together with
great care and purpose. Long before we existed, He had already determined of
life, our bodies, the choices we would make, and which specific spiritual and
natural gifts He would give us. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ
Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”. (Ephesians
2:10) If we matter to God before we are conceived, then we are just as valuable
to Him when we begin our lives in the womb and after we are born. This shows
that abortion goes against Gods word and goes against what he put each one of
us on this earth to do. Abortion cuts short Gods plan for new lives and
purposes.

A said before abortion is
one of the biggest controversies in our country and in the whole world at this
point in time. However, these debates will not slow down anytime soon as the
sides continue to get more heated as the conversations gain more attention. Abortion
is killing more innocent lives than our country has lost in wars since 2001. This
act that people choose to take part in is a brutal and shameful thing to do to
an unborn child. It causes more problems in the short-term and long-term that often
times do not go away, than carrying out the pregnancy would have done in the
first place. On top of that, us as Christians should take a stand and support
the pro-life stance as abortion goes completely against God’s Word. “Before I
formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” (Jeremiah
1:5)
