Before the British
colonization, English was the native language of around 6 million people and
was only spoken in Great Britain and south Ireland. But as the British started
to expand their influence creating colonies, the English language became more
and more popular. At its height, the British Empire was the largest in history
and for over a century, was the foremost global power. By 1922, it held sway
over one-fifth of the world’s population, with the empire covering almost a
quarter of the Earth’s total land area. Nowadays, the English language is used in
order to make communication possible between many different people who do not
share a common language.

The British
colonialism began in the 16th century but between the 18th
and 20th century it prospered. After the discovery of America by
Christopher Columbus, British explorers led expeditions to South America and
the Caribbean, among others, looking for valuable goods and in order to assure
trade they formed colonies. The first successful English colony in America was
created in Jamestown Virginia in 1607. Not long after thousands of people
embarked on this journey leaving their home countries for the promise of a
better future. Great Britain also had colonies in the Far East. India was their
main focus as it is a country rich in tea, silk, salt and spices which were
extremely sought after by the British upper class. Australia was used as a
penal colony for English prisoners most of which settled in the country after
serving their time.

As the number of
the colonies created by Great Britain became larger and larger the country
itself became richer and gained more political power. The British settlers
brought to the newly formed colonies their way of life and most importantly,
the English language. In some colonies the use of the King/Queens language was
forced upon the natives and those who disobeyed were severely punished. But in
other colonies the English language was adopted by the natives and used for
economic reasons as it was used as a common language
