Program Description:The mission of the Leadership Education Association for Distance Students (L.E.A.D.S.) is to support online and distance learning students in creating and implementing volunteer programs in their own community. L.E.A.D.S. is a program of the Student Activities Association of the University. Student volunteers and leaders can earn academic units through a course in Special Programs. The L.E.A.D.S. program works in conjunction with volunteer organizations across the nation, including Goodwill, Boys & Girls Club of America, YMCA, and the United Way. Student volunteers spend time in their own community building friendships and working to meet community needs. Through our services we attempt to act as allies and resources in an effort to provide online students with opportunities for service and leadership experience. The student-run programs provide services to a broad age spectrum ranging from youth to the elderlyWe implement our mission through the vehicle of service learning, which includes educational and experiential components. In the educational component, students gain leadership skills, learn about issues facing diverse communities, and engage in reflection activities. In the experiential component, students provide direct service, allowing them to address the issues of their own community and apply the skills they have learned. Volunteering through L.E.A.D.S. offers students an opportunity to complement academic learning with real-life experiences. Students are able to apply the knowledge gained in the academic setting by participating in community service programs. L.E.A.D.S. students perform the following tasks and are encouraged to: fundraise, manage program budgets, grant write, plan large-scale community events, recruit, select and screen volunteers.
