Steve as a basketball player was not easy

Steve Nash was born on February 7, 1974 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Steve Nash was a South African-born Canadian and he was considered as one of the greatest athlete to ever play the game of basketball. His family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan when he was 18 months old, before staying in Victoria, British Columbia. His father played professional soccer in various parts of the world before settling to Canada. Nash’s favourite sport was soccer and ice hockey, he always play with his brother and he did not start playing basketball until he was 12 years old. His mother told him once that her son will play in the NBA and he will become an NBA star in the future. Growing as a basketball player was not easy for Nash, his marks keeps dropping when he attended Mount Douglas Secondary School in B.C, his parents decided to move him to St. Michael’s University which is a boarding school in B.C to concentrate more on learning than his sports that he does. He soon gained popularity in his school because he became a star athlete from playing soccer, rugby and basketball. In his final season playing basketball for his team, he averaged 21.3 points per game and he carried his team to British Columbia AAA provincial championship where his team won a championship title. Steve Nash was named as the best player in the province because of his season stats and his hard work and dedication to basketball. Graduating from high school, no university wants to recruit Nash for their basketball team until the coach from Santa Clara, Dick Davey asked for his video footage. Dick Davey said that he “was nervous as hell just hoping that no one else would see him. It didn’t take a Nobel Prize winner to figure out this guy’s pretty good. It was just a case of hoping that none of the big names came around.” Nash was awarded with a scholarship by Santa Clara for the 1992-1993 season. Nash led his team Broncos to a WCC Tournament title and an upset victory over the No. 2 seed Arizona in the first round of NCAA Division I Tournament. Nash successfully carried his team to NCAA for two years in a row except they keep losing on the second round of the tournament. After playing four seasons of basketball in Santa Clara, Nash decided to take his talents to the NBA, where he started his own legendary career. After all the hard work he has done to get to the NBA, he was drafted 15th overall by the Phoenix Suns on the 1996 NBA draft. During his first year in the NBA, Nash was only a supporting role player for his team, he only averaged 10.5 minutes a game and support the main point guards Kevin Johnson and Sam Cassell. On his second season, his minutes increased significantly and was ranked 13th in the 3 point percentage that season. When Nash was traded to the Lakers for his final year, they played against the Portland Trailblazers which is their second game of the season, Nash broke his leg during a collision with Damian Lillard while defending full court. The leg injury made Nash retired as a Laker player. Nash played for the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers for his whole career as an NBA player and as a mentor to his fellow teammates. He was also compared to a lot of great point guards of his era such as Jason Kidd, Tony Parker and many more. One of his highlights during his career was when he won the Most Valuable Player award for 2 years in a row playing for the Phoenix Suns. Steve Nash was ranked 3rd on the all time assist rankings just behind John Stockton and Jason Kidd. Marc Stein of ESPN said, “Steve Nash didn’t just make teammates better. He let this writer in like few stars ever have. True honor to cover him for nearly two decades”. After his retirement, Nash decided to never play basketball again and he is willing to do something else to get his mind off basketball. Steve Nash was ranked 59 out of 250 players to be named as a hall of famer and to be named as one of the greatest player to ever play the game of basketball. While working as a basketball player, Nash built a foundation called Steve Nash foundation which brings aid to underserved children. Nash had the idea of foundation from his parents, they taught Nash that the world out there is very difficult and there’s a lot of inequality and people who are less fortunate to have a home. In a country where hockey sucks up so much of the oxygen it is very uncommon to have a Canadian like Steve Nash to be recognized in the sport, basketball. He is the ninth player to win consecutive MVP trophies and joins Magic Johnson as the only point guards to win the award more than once. “Steve is not just a great player,” Suns chairman Jerry Colangelo said. “He’s one of the few players who I believe have ever played who makes everyone better around him. There are very few players who have the ability to directly control the flow of the game, and he does it as well as anyone ever has.” Nash praised his teammates and coaching staff for “a perfect environment for me to succeed and for our team to succeed, and for me to stand here today.” This season, Nash had career highs in scoring (18.8 points), rebounding (4.2), field goal percentage (.512) and free throw percentage (a league-leading .921). He led the league in assists at 10.5 a game and finished sixth in 3-point percentage at 43.9.. The leg injury made Nash retired as a Laker player.
